Schroeder, (George) Richard, 77, of 188 Fox Hall Train in Athens, died Monday, September 1, 2008. Former teacher and writer, he is survived by his wife, Marilyn; son, George; daughter-in-law, Betty; grandson, Matt; granddaughter, Hailey; grandson-in-law, Brian; great-grandchildren, Caitlin, Matthew, Hannah; daughter, Jody; and son, Michael. Donations may be made to the American Cancer Society.

Born: Broken Bow, Nebraska on April 6, 1931. Parents: George Schroeder and Bethel Lamb Schroeder, both born in Fullerton, Nebraska. Graduated from Idaho State College with a BA and MA in English Literature. Previously married to Sharon Schroeder and had sons George of Athens, GA and Michael of California, Bethany, deceased. Grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

Married to Marilyn Clark Lockard on June 15, 1979. He was the teacher and headmaster of private schools (Woodmere Academy in Woodmere, New York, Valley School in Flint Michigan, Santa Fe Preparatory in Santa Fe, New Mexico.

Richard was an extraordinary teacher, working late hours with his students and having a breadth of knowledge in literature, art, history, and philosophy. His great love in life was writing which he pursued until his final hospitalization. His major work is a three volume semi-autobiographical novel entitled The Education of Harris Bailley.

His ashes are scattered at the Flint Cemetery in Worthington, Ohio, where Marilyn lived after his death. It is somehow fitting that his remains will rest in Flint Cemetery on Flint Road. He and Marilyn met in Flint, Michigan, where they began their lives together.
