MARTIN Gerhard E. Martin, passed away at the age of 89 in the early hours of December 1, 2011. He was born in the german-speaking Free State of Danzig (now Gdansk, Poland) and immigrated to the U.S. in 1960. Gerhard completed medical school in Berlin, Germany. His professional life included work in neurology and psychiatry in Germany and the U.S.A. He settled in Columbus in 1967 taking the position of director of outpatient services at the Central Ohio Hospital of MR and DD. From 1970 until 1987 Dr. Martin was chief of Neurology at the Nisonger Center for Mental Retardation, and saw patients at the neurology clinic of Children's Hospital. In addition, he worked from 1973-1979 as consulting neurologist to the Mt. Vernon Mental Retardation and Training Center. Dr. Martin assumed the position of Medical Director of the Columbus Developmental Center from 1980-1987. Later he enjoyed the challenge of being in charge of the newly created dual diagnosis unit of the Central Ohio Psychiatric Hospital. During partial retirement, he worked as psychiatrist at the Ohio Reformatory for Women and as consultant to the Mt. Vernon Developmental Center. When Dr. Martin retired from OSU in 1987 he received the status of professor emeritus in Neurology from the OSU College of Medicine. After retirement, Dr. Martin pursued many interests including, reading, photography, travel, bird-watching, and the study of international politics. He enjoyed spending winters in Florida and California. For many years he also taught German at the Griswold Senior Center in Worthington. Gerhard is survived by his wife of 46 years, Sieglinde; and their four children, Heide of Seattle, WA, Ulrike and husband, Mike Anderson of Sunbury, OH, Frank of Selfridge, ND, Kristine and husband, Steve Harris of Syracuse, NY; and his daughter from his previous marriage, Elena Ezeani of Bremen, Germany. Gerhard is also survived by six grandchildren, Max, Annika, Leif, Bela, Jonas, and Tanja; and great-grandchildren, Pascal, Anselm, Phileas, and Niklas. The family will receive friends from 12Noon-1 p.m. Tuesday, December 6, 2011 at the SCHOEDINGER WORTHINGTON CHAPEL, 6699 N. High St., Worthington, where service will begin at 1 p.m. Rev.
