Howard Alan Longfellow died on August 28th at the age of 94. He was born on March 9, 1928 in Chicago, Illinois to Harold R. and Helen Smith Longfellow. He graduated from The Ohio State University in 1949 with a BS degree in mechanical engineering. Howard married Jane Glenn on March 1, 1952 at Centenary United Methodist Church in Winston-Salem, NC. After a short time in San Louis Obispo, CA, where Howard served in the U. S. Army Signal Corps, they lived in Winston-Salem. In 1959, they moved to Reynoldsburg, OH and in 1965 moved to Columbus, near Worthington. Jane passed away in 2018.
Howard worked for AT&T Bell Laboratories for most of his career and retired from the company in 1989 after more than 30 years of service. Howard was active in the Worthington United Methodist Church, serving on many boards and committees. He had a lifelong love of learning and enjoyed traveling, the arts and fine dining. He was a gentleman, in the best sense of the word. Howard is survived by daughter Mary (Bennie) Mitchell; and son David (Virginia) Longfellow; sister Sandra (Robert) Ferguson; four grandchildren, Sarah Mitchell, Ryan (Jennifer) Mitchell, Katharine (Trevon) Noiva, and Kimberly Longfellow; and two great-grandchildren, Marisol and Emilia Mitchell. A celebration of his life will be held at the Worthington United Methodist Church at a later date.
