PEARLIE MAE CORBITT, better known as “Pearl”, gained her wings and went home to be with the Lord on September 16, 2022. She was born on May 21, 1937 in Winston Salem, North Carolina to Arthur and Ada Collins. Her family moved to Portsmouth, Ohio when she was a baby. She became a part of a very loving and supportive community with friends and connections that remain to this day. She attended Washington Grade School and Portsmouth High School, with great pride in both. Pearl and her siblings were raised by her mother Ada. Pearl had great stories of the labors of love that her mother imparted on her and her siblings with her strict no nonsense demeanor, making sure that they all became responsible adults. Pearl ran track in grade school and in community track programs. She was extremely good at track, notably winning a Fourth of July track meet and was “queen of the track” in the community parade. Pearl was baptized at age 12 at Beulah Baptist Church in Portsmouth, Ohio.
Pearl married James W. Corbitt on July 22, 1956 in Portsmouth, Ohio. They moved to Columbus, Ohio in 1962. Pearl continued her community pride, becoming an active part of her new community. She became an active member of Tabernacle Baptist Church. She enjoyed her time working in the food pantry the most. Pearl worked at Western Electric for many years until deciding to stay at home to care for her beloved children. She did everything to make sure her children were happy, healthy and had everything that they needed. Once her children were older, Pearl returned to work as a Sales Associate at Lazarus. She retired from Lazarus after about 20 years of dedicated employment. This career fit her perfectly as she was a fashionista and she never left home unless she was appropriately and fashionably dressed. She had a true passion for fashion and enjoyed picking out clothing for others. Pearl was a very strong and proud woman. Even when she was not feeling well, she insisted on getting dressed and looking her best at all times. Pearl loved the holidays and enjoyed spending time with her family, laughing and playing games. She loved to watch her favorite TV shows and eating a good meal while watching. Pearl also liked to travel. She enjoyed seeing and experiencing new places and things as much as possible, as long as she was able. Memories of Pearl will be forever cherished by her loving husband of 66 years, James W. Corbitt; brother, James Collins of Seattle, Washington; son, MacDonald James Corbitt; three daughters, Toya (Roger) Corbitt Perry of Indianapolis, Indiana; Kathryn Corbitt Hammond and Kimberley Corbitt; eight grandchildren, Jainell Corbitt, Jason (Aleah) Corbitt, KayRita (Brandon) Corbitt-Hutchings, Rodrick Perry, Ryan Perry, Reginald (Jennifer) Hammond, Jhas Corbitt, Dimonde (Tiffany) Hale; 10 great-grandchildren; and a host of nieces, nephews, family members and friends.
