This black-and-white aerial photograph shows the Worthington Pools as they appeared in 1959. The photograph is taken from the southeast looking west; the parking lot in the upper right-hand corner of the photograph is to the north of the pools.
The "L" shaped pool at the center of the photo was the first of the pools to open, on August 15, 1954. Managed by the non-profit Swiminc organization, the pool opened to residents of the Worthington School District and measured 120 feet long and 50 feet wide, except for the diving bay area where it was 82 feet wide. The pool held 300,000 gallons of water, which was re-filtered every eight hours on site, and could accommodate up to 500 swimmers. The photograph shows a crowded day at the pool, with numerous people swimming and sunbathing alongside the pool.
The smaller, lap pool to the left of it was opened on June 22, 1958. Measuring 50 feet wide by 82.5 feet long, the new pool meant more swim hours for everybody, and accommodated swim team practices, adult swim and family swim events.
Also shown in the picture is the concession stand and wading pool, visible in the upper right-hand corner of the photo between the main pool and the parking lot. The large building to the east of the pools, shown in the lower-right area of the photograph, is the bath house.
