Abstract | Annual yearbooks have been produced by the Worthington Garden Club for decades, documenting monthly meetings and programs. Among programs for the year 1934 was an open public meeting in March featuring a presentation by Columbus garden expert F. O. Evertz, who encouraged the adoption of the petunia as the official flower of Worthington. As reported in the Worthington News on March 8, 1934, plans for beautification of the village that year gained support of community members who sponsored prizes. Howerd Potter (Potter Lumber and Supply Company) offered $30 in prize money to encourage increased flower and vegetable gardens and Mayor Leonard Insley donated $5 as a prize to the most attractive front yard in the village. |
