Josephine Birnie Lewis, age 81, of Mount Vernon, a former Worthington resident, died Monday, April 15, 1991, at her residence in Mount Vernon. She was born February 2, 1910 in Mount Vernon to the late French W. and Olive (Hagamen) Severns. Mrs. Lewis was a resident of Worthington for several years and moved back to Mount Vernon in 1977. She was a member of the Gay Street United Methodist Church in mount Vernon. She served on the board of the Hannah Browning Home in Mount Vernon and was active with the Knox Community Hospital Auxiliary. She was a member of the Town and Country Garden Club, The Old Homestead Club; and the Heritage Row Board, and the Mount Vernon Country Club, all in Mount Vernon. She was a former member of Brookside Country Club in Columbus. Mrs. Lewis attended Miami University in Oxford, Ohio and was a member of Sigma, Sigma, Sigma Sorority. Survived are son, James R. Birnie, Donald H. Birnie; son and daughter-in-law, Richard and Debbie Birnie, all of Worthington; daughter, Melissa B. Lewis, of Dublin; four grandchildren, Andrew Lewis, Kyle Lewis, Philip Birnie and Lauren Birnie; her brother, John Severns of Fort Pierce, Fla.; several nieces and nephews. She was proceeded in death by her first husband, Donald H. Birnie in 1969; her second husband, Lawrence "Ty" Lewis; a brother, Robert D. Severns; two sisters, Edna S. Engelhardt and Betty S. Kerr. Funeral service will be 11 a.m., Thursday, at the Flowers-Snyder Funeral Home, in Mount Vernon, with Rev. Robert Clarke officiating. Burial will be in Walnut Grove Cemetery in Worthington. Friends may call at the funeral home one hour prior to the funeral on Thursday. Memorial contributions can be made to Hospice of Knox County, 302 E.
