This walking stick belonged to Orange Johnson (b. February 7, 1790 - d. November 28, 1876), Worthington comb maker and entrepreneur who later became a successful manufacturer and banker.
Walking sticks or canes were a popular article of apparel from the 17th through early 20th century. A well made stick of expensive materials alerted all who saw the bearer that the person had means and status. Johnson's stick has an ebony shaft, with a gold floral engraved head.
