WALKER Byron Harold Walker, age 95, of Worthington, Oh., passed away peacefully on June 30, 2009. Born on Christmas Day in 1913, he grew up in Midvale, Oh. Byron completed a Bachelor and Master's degree from Ohio University in the 1930's and later pursued doctoral studies at Harvard, Vanderbilt and Ohio State universities. In a career dedicated to education, he taught history and civics in Niles, Alliance, and Sandusky, Oh. where he was appointed Head of the Social Studies Department. He also instructed courses at Bowling Green State University and Smith College. Byron retired from the State of Ohio Department of Education in 1976 as Supervisor of Social Studies after 41 years devoted to the educational needs of Ohioans. His many achievements over a distinguished career included a Freedoms Foundation Award, John Hay Fellowship and the authoring of textbooks and resource guides. During his long retirement, Byron indulged his passion for golf, played bridge and took up ballroom dancing. Byron was predeceased by his parents Fannie and Remus Walker, his wife Jean, sister Martha and brother Jack. He is survived by his loving children, Martha, John and Jim. The family thanks the 7th floor staff at Worthington Christian Village for their exceptional care and compassion. At Mr. Walker's request, a funeral will not be held.
