Catharine Alvena Birkhead Trimble, age 95 formerly of Delaware died Tuesday January 2, 2001 in Los Angeles, CA at the home of her daughter. She was born on October 25, 1905 in Worthington to the late Lettie & James Birkhead. Graduate of Worthington High School in 1924 and from the Normal Department at Wilberforce in 1926 she later attended Ohio Wesleyan University, receiving her Bachelors of Science Degree in Education in 1962 from Central State University at Wilberforce, Ohio. She devoted twenty years in the teaching field throughout Ohio, in Ashland, Columbus and Delaware, becoming the first black teacher for the Delaware City Schools, teaching at the Conger Woodward and Boardman Schools, retiring in 1975. Member of Zion ZME Church, serving as pianist for over 30 years, served as Sunday School teacher, Superintendent, President of the Missionary society, and Trustee. Former member of Easter Seal Society for Crippled Children and Adults of Delaware, Delaware Mental Health Assoc., Estella R. Davis Charity Club, NAACP, and Delaware Human Relations Council. Her commitment to those causes lead her to participate in the march on Washington in 1963 to hear Dr. King deliver his famous "I Have a Dream" speech. She married Dwight Trimble in 1928, he proceeded her in death in 1956, daughter: Marie Trimble Bradby, 4 brothers, 5 sisters. Survived by daughter: Martha Trimble Jackson, with whom she resided for over 10 years, son: Dwight (Gertrude) Trimble of Delaware, 4 grandsons Michael and Allen Trimble of Delaware, Pete Bradby of Delaware, Allen L. Bradby of Knoxville, TN; granddaughter, Catharine (Philip) Whitworth of Elyria; several grandchildren, nephews: James L. (Martha) Jordan of Columbus, Ellsworth B. (Berniece) Jordan of Columbus, Edgar B. (Charlotte) Jordan of Yellowspring, Ohio, and a host of other relatives and close friends. Friends may call Thursday 5-8 p.m. at DeVore-Snyder Funeral Home, 75 W. William St. (SR 36) Delaware. Funeral services will be held Friday 11:00 a.m. at Zion AME Church, 140 S. Washington St., Delaware, Rev. Harold L. Turner officiating. Interment Walnut Grove Cemetery, Worthington.
