Barbara Joan (née Prior) Mahaney, of Columbus, died peacefully on Sunday, October 23, 2022 at age 86. Born in 1936 to Carl G. & Estella Prior, Barbara graduated from Columbus North High School in 1953 and went on to become an award-winning realtor.
In 1957, she married longtime friend Philip "Flip" Mahaney at Overbrook Presbyterian Church, where she was a lifetime member. Barbara went on to raise two children in Brookside, NJ, before retiring first to Hilton Head, SC, before finally returning to Columbus, OH.
Barbara was passionate about animals, providing a home to a wide variety of shelter pets over the decades. She served as the first shelter director at Noah's Ark Animal Shelter in Ledgewood, NJ and remained committed to charitable work for the protection of animals throughout her life. She was also actively involved in her church and various community service groups. Barbara was preceded in death by her husband Philip "Flip", her father Carl Grant, her mother Estella, and her sister Edith Bonita. She is survived by her two children, Alicia (Kent) and Lance (Patti), her grandson Kyle, and many beloved cousins, nieces, and nephews.
Private interment will be held at Walnut Grove Cemetery, Worthington, OH. In lieu of flowers, contributions, if desired, may be made to The Cat Welfare Association, 741 Wetmore Rd, Columbus, OH 43216-2255, one of the many animal charities she loved.
