Virdre C. Laws, Sr., age 87, of Worthington, died Monday, April 20, 1992, in St. Ann's Hospital. Born June 30, 1904. Preceded in death by parents, Rev. and Mrs. Frank C. Laws, Sr., sisters, Mrs. Neola Bess, Mrs. Daisey Wise, Mrs. Ella Mae Bates, and Mrs. Servernia Foust, brothers, Ernest, Frank Jr., and Ellsworth Laws, daughter, Marianne Laws Chandler, and a baby son. Survived by loving wife of 65 years, Mrs. Esther M. Laws; son, Virdre C. (Debbie) Laws, Jr.; daughters Mrs. Geneva J. (Ervin Michael) Colston, Mrs. Virginia L. McCammon, and Mrs. Ethel M. Traylor; sister, Mrs. Ruth Wise, of Lexington, S.C.; eight grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; sister-in-law, Mrs. Woodie B. Laws; brother-in-law, William Bates, of Columbus; and a host of other relatives and friends. Special friends Mr. and Mrs. Clyde Groves. Retired from Columbus Malleable Iron Co. Faithful member of St. John AME Church, Worthington. He enjoyed many years as a member of the East End Glee Class of the Capitol City Singing Union, an organization dedicated to the preservation of shape note singing. Funeral service 1 p.m. Thursday, April 23, 1992 at the Rutherford-Corbin Chapel, 515 High St., Worthington, with Rev. William Callian, officiating. Friends may call after 9 a.m. Thursday. The family will be in attendance 1 hour prior to the service. Interment will be in Walnut Grove Cemetery.
