James (Jim) Gardiner Haywood, 95, went home to the Lord, November 1, 2016. His adoring wife, Jerry, was at his side. Jim, Jerry, and their eldest daughter Cheryl moved to Franklin, TN 6 years ago, after living in Worthington, OH for over 50 years. Jim invested his time in the Worthington community, serving as Superintendent of Sunday Schools at Worthington United Methodist, PTA President of Colonial Hills, Evening Street, and Worthington High Schools, and president of the Cardinal Boosters, which supported local athletics, from 1972-73. Jim loved tennis, golf, Little League baseball, and vacations on Hilton Head Island. He was a respected and loved friend, teammate, neighbor, and coworker, but his family, who loved him dearly, always took priority. Jim was born November 27, 1920 in the District of Columbia, where he graduated from Woodrow Wilson High School. He was the youngest child of Harry Adelbert and Grace Daniels Haywood. Jim earned a BS in Mechanical Engineering from The Ohio State University in 1943 and received his Professional Engineer Certification in 1953. Jim was an active member of Delta Tau Delta Fraternity and served in the US Army during World War II. In his career, he worked for Eastern Aircraft, North American Rockwell, and the State of Ohio. He especially enjoyed working on design of carrier-based aircraft. Jim married his college sweetheart and love of his life, Jerry Virginia Stone, on June 2, 1944. Their children are: Cheryl June Haywood; Joellen (Jodie) Haywood Jones (Jim) of Bluffton, SC; James William (Bill) Haywood (Lynn) of Boerne, TX; and Sally Haywood Rains (John) of Brentwood, TN. Their grandchildren are: Jeffrey Jones (1978-2005), Jennifer Jones, Brett Haywood and Piper Haywood (Sam Baldwin), and Sara and Kelly Rains. Jim was a loving husband, father, grandfather, and uncle. He will be remembered with love always. A memorial service will be planned in Worthington, OH in 2017. In lieu of flowers, a donation may be made to the Worthington United Methodist Church Children’s Sunday School Program, 600 N. High St., Worthington, OH 43085.
