Frank Willis Bope, 1918-2013

Bope Frank Willis Bope, Ph.D., age 94, of Columbus, Ohio, died Wednesday, June 26, 2013, surrrounded by family at Whetstone Gardens Care Center, after a long illness. Born in Thornville, Ohio in 1918. Retired associate dean and pharmaceutical chemistry professor of The Ohio State University College of Pharmacy. Long-time member of Indianola Presbyterian Church. Received his B.S. in Pharmacy summa cum laude from The Ohio State University, 1941. Dr. Bope started his career as a graduate teaching assistant, University of Minnesota College of Pharmacy, 1941-42. After serving our country in the U.S. Army 1942-46 achieving the rank of Captain, he earned his Ph.D. in pharmaceutical chemistry at the University of Minnesota, 1948. He joined the faculty of The Ohio State University College of Pharmacy in 1948 as an assistant professor. During his early years, he held a 9-month contract at OSU which allowed him to work summer months as a registered pharmacist in local pharmacies. For his 36 year career at The OSU College of Pharmacy, he was a professor, advisor, secretary, and associate dean. For many years, he was an advisor for Kappa Epsilon Sorority. Dr. Bope was recognized with a Legends of Pharmacy Scholarship Fund bearing his name. He loved his work at OSU, and he loved working with students. He received the Miriam R. Balshone Award for Distinguished Teaching in 1977, and the College of Pharmacy Distinguished Alumni Award in 1984. Dr. Bope contributed articles to The Journal of the American Pharmaceutical Association. He was a member of the American Association of Colleges of Pharmacy, the American Pharmaceutical Association, The Ohio State University Alumni Association, and Sigma Xi (The Scientific Research Society). Preceded in death by parents Jesse Benton Bope and Edna Whitmer Bope, brother and sister-in-law Herbert and Virginia Bope, identical twin Charles Bope with whom he shared a special bond, wife Mary Eleanor Parker Bope, and wife Mary Helser Ferguson Bope. Preceded also by brothers-in law and sisters-in-law, Walter and Louise Foster, Wayne Parker, Wendell and Dorothy Parker, and Leo Parker. Dr. Bope was very devoted to his family and had a special place in his heart for his grandchildren. Survived by daughter and son-in-law, Linda (Bope) Maeder and Dennis Maeder; grandchildren, Sarah (Maeder) and Phil Schoch, Gregory Maeder, and Matthew and Shakthi (Kanagalingam) Maeder; as well as survived by great-grandchildren, Carter and Parker Schoch. He is also survived by sisters-in-law, Mary Tharp Bope, Audrey Parker, and Nolene Parker, and numerous nieces and nephews. Friends may call at the SOUTHWICK-GOOD & FORTKAMP FUNERAL CHAPEL, 3100 N. High St. Friday, 4-7 p.m. and Saturday, 8:30-9:15 a.m., followed by the service at 9:30 a.m. Rev. Skip Jackson, officiating. Interment Walnut Grove Cemetery. Donations can be made to the Frank W.
